Quick 'n' Quirky DIYs

Asha Mohan

Over a period of time we have tried many DIYs some of it has worked really well and one or two not so great ones. So thought will be fun to round up few of them here.

Lego bricks:

This one was again one our earliest DIY and by far the most easiest and very useful one that helped us to store our keys without losing them.

You'll need:

- Lego bricks the small rectangles or squares of your preffered size and colour

- Lego Key chains - this works perfectly to clip on to the bricks

- Nail & Hammer

How to do it:

- Find the desired area, like a side of a shelf or wall and place the brick and drill hole through the centre of the brick

- And hang away the keychains as you wish. It is as simple as this :)

(PS: This is in our previous apartment. The room in the background is in its earliest stage, I wish I had the pictures to show the yearly transformation that it had gone through :D)

Paint chip samples:

Our newest and almost a zero cost DIY. If you have a large or medium sized photo frame and some paint chip samples from a DIY store.

Weekly Tracker - A simple and effective one for Hari to manage his weekly office stuff. We went for an one colour shade variation combo, you can always go to town with the colours.

You'll need:

- Medium or Large photo frame

- Paint Chip samples

- Glue stick

How to do it:

- We had selected weekly tracking option and went with one shade variation

- Glue the shade card on to the backing sheet of the frame. We went for 4 on top and 3 at the bottom

- Once the glue dries, put the backing sheet into the frame just like a photo, and you are done

- Mount the frame onto the wall and start jotting the notes

- We use a combination of a white board marker and chalk markers

Bookmark: This one is for me and for all book lovers, such a cute one with myriad of colours.

You'll need:

- Paint chip samples (preferable one card with gradient)

- Punching machine

- Some leftover twine or perfume/watch ribbons you may have

- Scissors

How to do it:

- We used an existing bookmark as a template to cut this one out

- Punch a hole on the top and passed ribbon through it and completed with a knot

Crayon art

Its one of those DIY's we started with great expectation and it fell flat ;). I have figured out its got to do with the size of the canvas and the colours (should have gone for a bigger one and bit more muted colours)

You'll need:

- Unused Crayons (cut to length as per size of the canvas)

- Canvas

- Black thick sheet (like a chart)

- Hair dryer

How to do it:

- We first decided on the colour palette and cut crayons per the size of the canvas

- Place the canvas on a sheet of paper or floor to catch any drips

- Cut the black thick sheet to a shape (we went for the birds)

- Cut and arrange the crayons after which 'switch on' the hair dryer and slowly start showing on top of the crayons

- The crayons will start melting and dripping through the canvas

- We ran the crayons to melt through till the bottom and guided the flow to cover all of the canvas

Unfortunately the crayon art didn't survive the move, but will definitely give it another go at some point in future..
